The Jakarta Players are a venerable amateur theatre company in Jakarta, Indonesia. In the Fall of 2001 they mounted Sam Shephard's Pulitzer Prize winning 'Buried Child'.
This is one dark and moody script, and it comes out guns blazing right in the opening scene, where we meet Dodge (Bill Titmuss) and Haile (Laura Chernside).
Cast and director Tom Schulz put an incredible amount of time into the process and when they showed a little preview one weekend mid-way, I was so energised by it I asked them if I could make a recording of it. They liked the idea, I planned it out and shot all dressed rehearsals and performances live with a single camera and a handful of lectern mics, to be cut together at a later stage.
That 'later' turned out to be almost five years later, when I finally found the space and time to spend almost three months cutting it into something that resembled its potential.
