NATO Protests Turn Violent

STORY: Hundreds of protesters are clashing with riot police in the French city of Strasbourg since the eve of a NATO summit yesterday. Protesters are smashing windows, vandalizing cars and barricading streets in their bid to reach the city center. Police met with a hail of rocks thrown by protesters, and have been firing tear gas at them, forcing them back to their campsite. Dozens of demonstrators have been arrested. Others seek refuge in the surrounding woods, chased by security guards. Journalists attempting to approach the protesters&; campsite are being stopped by police. Protest leaders say they want to bring chaos to the NATO gathering by peaceful means. Police have warned that clashes at the G20 meeting in London earlier this week have only fuelled tensions. Earlier in the day, rioters charged a military vehicle that happened to cross their path. A masked youth managed to hurl a pole through the windscreen of the vehicle. One of the two occupants drew his gun and pointed it towards the sky, giving his partner time to drive off. German police say they fear violent confrontations when the NATO meeting formally begins today. Over twenty thousand protestors are expected.
