!!!!!AS OF 10.7.3 AND The new Nvidia drivers, you NO LONGER need to install ATY Init nor do you need to edit anything! A LINK is posted below. This was found by the Netkas community. Geforce 580 is now Plug n Play in 10.7.3 with the new drivers!!!!!

Note; I recommend NOT applying future updates if you install that until it can be verified that future versions are Plug n Play too.

Here I demonstrate GTX 580's running in a Mac Pro under Lion. Neither the Mac Pro nor the cards have been modified.
As of OS 10.7.2, Mac OS X natively has the drivers preinstalled for the entire GTX 500 series. To enable it, I simply had to enter the Device ID in to the Preference file within the drivers to make it recognize the card. To make it work, I installed a specific version of ATY_Init extension, which is made by the incredible Netkas.

It runs beautifully in OS X. In this video, I demonstrate both the game functionality, and the CUDA functionality. I show here that you can indeed upgrade the mac pro to PC level, and beyond the average. To clarify, this is NOT a hackintosh, no Chameleon or rEFIt.

Nothing else is modified except for just one line of the driver file and the installation of ATY_Init.

Credit and Huge Thanks goes out to the community at Netkas.org for all the advice on the subject of PC cards in Mac Pro's, as well as Netkas for ATY_Init.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to finish all of the tests. I intended to show the cards working in SLI mode under windows, which I have gotten working via SLIpatch, but I have been experiencing issues as of updating the drivers recently. It takes a very specific driver version to get it working like that, and it takes hours of trial and error to find the right one. Ironically, it's only because of SLIPatch that I even bothered dealing with Nvidia's 580s in the first place.

Much to my heartbreak, I've had to sell these shortly after making this video, as I am very short on money. I sold them to Ebay seller Wittjack for some quick cash. He's reselling them as well now; http://www.ebay.com/itm/Two-Palit-Nvidia-Geforce-GTX-580-3GB-SUPER-RARE-boxes...

All of the choppy editing and cuts were to shorten the video down to 15 minutes, so I ditched various bad lines or long segments of nothingness.

  • so i can't install this card if i have snow leopard?? I did not update to Lion. I don't really want to. But is it possible to just plug n play on snow leopard??

  • @karbine409 No, snow leopard does not have the drivers for the 500 series at all.

  • Please note that as of 10.7.3 AND The new Nvidia drivers, you don't need to use ATY Init, nor do you need to edit the driver! I will post up a link

  • MACS SUCK!! Get a PC and get a life

  • @sebascorrea97 I do have a PC that I built as well. It's rather funny actually, in many ways I am able to upgrade my Mac Pro moreso than even it...

  • what about the real performance cuda-score?

  • @Arlanotrack In what? Like in Cuda-z or something? Which OS X program should I use to get a CUDA Score?

  • @PuncNugget Uhmm, actually I am a gamer... I don't have anything against Apple, dont get me wrong. The only thing I dont like is their "exclusivness". For the same price you buy a mid range mac you can buy a high end PC. In fact, I'vr tryied to use transformation packs but none of them work well :-(. I dont quite understand yet why all the proffessionals use MACs for video edditing and such. Can u explain me?? Cause im into that also.

  • @sebascorrea97:

How 'bout this, Get the right PC parts and configure it to make a Hackintosh with one SSD having Mac OS X (for your high end apps like Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Photoshop work and render better) AND the other SSD having Windows 7 for your video games. Because that's what Windows 7 is only good for anyway; since you sound like a gamer...
