sorry for your lost.
You could have landed it, but you went for the tree hmmmm....
The altitude was enough, and no wind.
You could make the turn using more rudder and less ailerons to prevent losing too much speed when approaching.

@tbonesixtynine I have a nice electric park flyer, and it's more or less maintenance free... I've been very content with it, I see no reason to get anything bigger or better.

Any air plane will run out of gas if you let it. It is up to the pilot to know how long it will run. You should stay close to the model landing field when you know you are getting low on fuel. Perhaps you were running the engine too rich.
The full size Mazda engine burns only about 5% more fuel
than a Lycoming or Continental air craft engine.
