NeighborHOOD Faces - Bed Stuy

This was my second documentary for NYU's Sight and Sound: Documentary class for the 2011 Spring Semester. The assignment was to portray a neighborhood in 1-3 minutes. I chose to do my short documentary on the Brooklyn neighborhood, Bedford Stuyvesant, also known as "Bed Stuy." Some people refer to this neighborhood as "Bed Stuy Do or Die."

Bed Stuy is home to rappers such as The Notorious B.I.G., Jay Z, Fabolous, Maino, Cormega, Mos Def, Papoose, Talib Kweli and Memphis Bleek. It is also home to other famous people such as filmmaker Spike Lee, comedians Tracy Morgan and Chris Rock and heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson.

My goal for this documentary was to focus on the struggle of living in Bed Stuy. I wanted to end the documentary on a positive note because a majority of the people who live there are doing all that they can to change the community.

Are you kidding me? The critique I have is that it seems a bit too earnest. The irony obviously comes out as you're an NYU student who never would have come to the neighborhood except to do a documentary and yet you're relishing in the fact that they're flipping you off.

damn i actually wouldnt mind living there but i dont think i would last im a white canadian bed stuy doesnt seem as bad as people make it out to be. 17 y/o weighing in at 220 pounds athletic love hockey (of course if anyone thinks id survive there tell me and idk if the cameraman only showed the good people in bed stuy but idk and i mainly only found out about bed stuy from a show on tv
