1972 Richard Petty / Lowe's Commercial ~ Plymouth Road Runner

Way before Lowe's sponsored 4-time NASCAR Champion, Jimmy Johnson they chose another Champion as their spokesperson: "The King ~ Richard Petty"

Beginning in 1968, Richard promoted Lowe's riding mowers....and this was his VERY first sponsorship during his racing career. By 1971 Lowe's decided to sell a custom riding mower called the "Richard Petty Special" which was basically an E.T. Rugg riding mower painted "Petty Blue". The following year (1972) extra decals were added to the rider's hood that read "43" and "BY Petty".

I've collected "Richard Petty Special" riding mowers for many years and currently have (3) 1971 models and (3) from 1972. (Those were the only years they were built.) One of my 1971's is the prototype.

I've been lucky enough to also obtain the original Richard Petty cardboard standup used for this promotion, and the original film footage.

Lowe's also had a "Give-Away" car during this promotion that I have not located. It would be an awesome addition to my collection! The car was a 1970 Petty-Blue Road Runner Superbird.

If you find it sitting in someone's backyard (that's where I've found a couple of my mowers) please let me know. LOL

The car in the video is a 72 Plymouth Road Runner, not a Dodge Charger. Other than that, really cool commercial.
