The Washington National Cathedral's Kibbey Carillon is the third heaviest in the world. The 53 bronze bells were cast at one time and installed in the early 1960s.
Reaching the carillon requires a climb of 150 feet up limestone spiral staircases (or a shorter trip in two elevators) from the nave's floor.
The enormous bronze bells hang from a steel frame that surrounds a small sheltered area where carillonneur Edward M. Nassor has been playing the keyboard and pedals at the Cathedral since 1990.
You can hear Carillon recitals at the Washington National Cathedral on Saturdays at 12:30pm. The bells are best heard from the Bishop's Garden.
