Colorful Characters Invade Downtown SA
Thousands of fans of the Japanese-style of animation known as Anime have invaded the Rivercenter Marriott for a three-day convention. Most of them have come dressed up in costumes portraying their favorite Anime characters.
"It's a celebration of all things Japanese and also nerd fandom," said David Ramirez, a spokesman for the event that also celebrates science fiction and other film and television genres.
"We have zombies, horror, science fiction, video gaming, table top gaming, all sorts of programming," Ramirez said.
Now in it's third year, the convention continues to draw a larger crowd each year. Last year, the event drew more than 3,000 visitors to the city. This year's convention is expected to attract a record crowd of 5,000 self-described nerds.
"This is a chance for people who can sometimes be ostracized, you know the nerds are kind of always looked down upon," said Ramirez. "This is just a chance for people to let go and embrace their nerdyness, have fun and enjoy the things they really like."
While the majority of attendees are in there tweens to twenties, there are some older Anime fans taking part in the workshops, panels and exhibits.
"I've been doing it for about 10 years now," said gray-haired Catherine Allison, who admitted she got hooked on Anime through her younger nieces and nephews.
"The age is not so important as to have fun," said another "adult" who wouldn't give his real name. "The goal here is to have a good time and you can do that no matter what age you are."

@TheYugiohgxfan Cosplay is encouraged for everyone who attends but it is by no means required.

I dont know what to be yetttt TT^TT /sob
....you dont have to tecnically dress up as someone from an anime do you? Because if you can dress up as whatever than choosing what I want to cosplay will be much easier :)
EvilGiggles13 8 months ago
@EvilGiggles13 You not required at all to dress up as an anime character. We have plenty of people who dress up as Sci-Fi, Comic Book or even current pop culture.
