Soul singer Laura Lee started out on Chicago-based Chess Records (though she recorded at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals) and her most popular song from her tenure there is undoubtedly "Dirty Man" from 1967. After Chess, Laura signed with Hot Wax Records, one of two Detroit-based labels started by songwriters/producers Holland-Dozier-Holland following their defection from Motown. This track comes from Laura's second Hot Wax album, Two Sides of Laura Lee. It might not have been a hit - it reached #36 R&B/#65 pop) - but it's a gem for sure. Laura Lee, like her contemporaries Betty Wright, Bettye Lavette, Millie Jackson and Denise LaSalle, was a sho nuff rough n' raw soul singer and this is her at her best.
What did Jim Kelly have to do with it ?
