Maurice Sendak, the creative genius behind books such as 'Where the Wild Things Are' and 'In the Night Kitchen', is an illustrator whose work has been seen by millions of people all over the world.
TateShots travelled to the forest in upstate New York where Sendak is now based to look back over his literary career, discuss his love for William Blake and hear why he thinks that as an artist, 'you just have to take the dive'.

"My work has always been considered inappropriate; but the ones that I love - the ones that I think work as works of art... - are inappropriate." Great profile of Maurice Sendak, writer/illustrator.

Honestly, my feelings about art and Maurice has become more intellectual, as I realize his work. HIs Illustrations In the Night Kitchen, Where the WIld Things Are, Brundibar and Outside Over There, have made me feel more comfortable about the direction of where my artwork may take me. These videos are gifts to learn by, a place to understand the values of history, art history and immagination.I had shed a few tears at first, and sharing his life in his home has brought me closer to this feeling.

Nowadays, children have access to all sorts of entertainment. They watch various cartoons and listen to audio storybooks. It would be splendid if we came back to the roots: sit with a book and a cup of hot chocolate in front of a fireplace. Touch the faded paper and feel its smell... Then read the book to our little niece or nephew and see their smile while we act our roles. With no doubt he is a very talented illustrator and a colourful figure.

    RIP

I just learned he is dead.

My world grew a little bit smaller learning that.

What a hero this man is.
