This is a video that truly demonstrates the power of motivation and positive reinforcement.

How are you going to get a fish to do a behavior? Shock it, hit it, yell at it, force it!?! Nope.

Simply find what motivates it and reward!

*The first fish is a peacock grouper that has been desensitized and trained to come out, when his target is presented underwater, and eat. Which for the species is uncommon as they are elusive and don't eat on a regular schedule. They can go weeks without eating.
*The second is of a surgeon fish that is trained to touch a target, and a unicorn fish that is being desensitized to the target.
*The last is of a yellowfin surgeonfish that has been trained to directionally swim through underwater hoops.

The power of motivation of is strong, smarts has nothing to do with it!! :)

  • is the removal of the target the marker? Nice video...what do you usually use as markers for fish? Iam debating between using sound or a visual marker like a led light. : ) wonderful video btw

  • These fish didn't really have a marker, I just tried to provide reinforcement as immediate as possible. We didn't use a marker because there are so many fish together and some that were more aggressive than others so we didn't want to give the aggressive ones a heads up that food was coming :) If I used a marker, I would tap the water.

  • more vids please!!! i love this stuff!

do u guys work at a zoo or something?

  • This video is from a dolphin training internship that I did in Oahu, HI.

    Glad you liked it :)

  • Can they retrieve a ball? How long did it take to go through the hoop? Cute! Great work!

  • The one thay goes through hoops could probably learn to retrieve a ball/object. He is very curious and highly food motivated.
