Lull Mengesha Publishing is offering a scholarship for first time authors (insert look of doubt). Why? Well, we remember what it was like to self-publish our first book. It was confusing, frustrating and the overall process felt isolating. We would love to help at least one bypass these stressors by covering ALL publishing expenses and creating visibility for their book, hence the video.
How to Apply?
1) Submit a video response telling us about the book you want to publish. Explain what your book is about and what community you are trying to reach with your book. Tell us a little about yourself and be as specific as possible such as "students studying whale watching in North Dakota." Make the video interesting and between 1-2 minutes. Label your video:
LMP Scholarship (your name) (Book title)
2) Once you have your video together make sure to email us your video as well as a book synopsis, less than a couple of paragraphs would be great. Email us at lullmengesha@gmail.com with "ATTN: Publishing with a Purpose Scholarship" in the subject line.
Who can Apply:
1) Must be over 18 years old, sorry young bucks
2) Must be a US Resident, sorry Canada
3) Must be a first time author, sorry Malcolm Gladwell
Scholarship deadline is October 1st, 2011. If you have anymore questions please post them in the comments section. Good luck! The lucky winner will be selected December 1st.
Questions from Applicants:
1. Do I have to have a finished manuscript in order to apply?
No, however showing a timeline for completion is helpful in giving us a good idea of when your project will be complete.
2. Does the book have to be non-fiction?
Any genre is fine with us as long as you have identified a community that you wish to help with your writing.
3. Is there a page limit on the finished manuscript?
No page limit on our end but think of your reader. What would they like to digest.
4. Do you have access to editors, or will I have to edit the entire book myself?
You will have to edit the book on your own. This is a scholarship for the publishing of your book. You will be able to publish under your own imprint.
5. How does the process work? Do I just send you my manuscript and you do everything? Or is it a collaborative process?
If you are selected we can help guide you through the editing process and answer questions but we won't be doing any editing for you.
6. When choosing an entry, how important does the video quality have to be? Are you looking for the funniest, quirkiest video - or does the content of the book matter more? Or is it some balance of both?
The content of the book is surely important but lets face it, the person you are is attached to your product. Your ability to present yourself well and market is key to independent and more established writers. The video gives us a chance to assess how comfortable you are with speaking and talking about yourself and your work. As you can see Lull made several mistakes during his taping so no worries on making it perfect. The video acts as a way to bring visibility to you and your work even if you don't get selected.
How engaged are viewers of your video? Does your video get a great response from the youtube peeps? This is not vital but something to think about while promoting your video.
A good video on book promotion would be extremely helpful!

@blackturtleshow what are some of the questions you have about book promotion? I would like to provide as much value as you need.

@lullmengesha What if you have written a book, but can't quite figure out what the audience would be? And once you figure that out, how do you reach the audience?
blackturtleshow 2 months ago
@blackturtleshow Best way to figure out who your audience is, is by engaging them in conversation. From online groups to in person meet ups, find ways to engage and talk to as many people about your work as possible. From there you can get an idea about how who is your intended audience and what they are most responsive to. Hope that helps.
