@BvD14624 Each employee has to wear an indicator, which colors when you get unhealthy dose (develops through years, just like medical x-ray operators wear such indicators). After you get a dose, you can't work for a certain amount of time, and after radiation is gone from one's body, they can return to work.
Note that the recommended level of dose a plant employee can be exposed to is sometimes lower than common background radiation. They are safer in there than us out here.

@BvD14624 A properly running nuclear reactor is completely safe. If it suffers a meltdown, that's entirely another story.

do the reactors expose radiation to employees? if so is it daily, and enough to give them cancer
BvD14624 11 months ago
@BvD14624 no, because the reactor is under water, with 2 meter cement covers over it.

so why was this not done in Japan. (turned off)?
superklb86 11 months ago
@superklb86 because it can take up to a week or even months for the reactor to cool down to a low temp.

can it be turned off if a natural disaster were to occur ?
superklb86 11 months ago
@superklb86 Yes, the control rods would be dropped into the reactor core stopping the nuclear fission from happening.
