AiMai means "obscure. vague. indistinct. blurred." in Japanese.

We sometimes are forced to dumb-down and dilute our identity so that it fits into a neatly packaged box. Without knowing it, we may often choose or favor one aspect of our individuality over another. The world isn't black and white. The lines are blurred. We can't be packaged neatly.

In this video, the character identifies with both Japanese and American cultures. She's not 50% of each. She is 100% Japanese American. No matter what she wears, what language she speaks, whatever boxes she may be forced to check, how others perceive her, or even how she perceives herself... she is who she is and doesn't need anyone's permission to do so.

The video is kinda trippy. As we look at her character, we don't need to ask ourselves "which one is really her?" She embodies everyone on screen.

*Video preceded a fashion showcase where the clothes harmonized both American and Japanese styles. The character appeared on stage wearing the same kimono in the same position shown in the last frame of the video.

  • This is a gripping video. It really does make you do a double-take on what your identity is. Well done.

P.S. What's the name of the song in this video?

  • Thanks for the comment!

The song is called "Act 2" and it's by the artist RJD2.

  • Loved it!

  • You just don't understand. The cruel part of living in a society is we are forced to conform to what people like to call "social norms" Many a day I've wanted to rock my Napoleon Bonaparte outfit to show my French heritage but was afraid of what people would say.....

  • I love it !

  • It's edited very well, excellent work, but the plot is lame. The whole "i'm culturally misunderstood" thing is so lame. So you have a multi cultural background, ohhhhh stop the presses.

(btw, my mom is korean my dad is black and i speak japanese, I know what i'm talking about, maybe)
