A bare-bones demonstration of the bass line for YYZ.

When I play the opening unison run, slowly, along with the metronome, the tidbits after the main run are not counted out correctly. I'm just using the metronome for general time keeping.

On thing to keep in mind when playing this song is to strike a balance between playing with enough force to get a good "aggressive" sound out of the bass but not so hard as to choke out the notes and potentially lose your speed and dexterity - as speed and dexterity are two things you'll definitely require to master this song. A bit of luck wouldn't hurt either.

I'm sure I could have done a better job on this but if I'd have kept putting it off I might not ever have gotten around to posting it.

I'll try to follow up shortly with the next video that will demonstrate the remainder of the song including the bass "solos".

Also, at the 1:50 mark I refer to "the A string" in error. What I meant to refer to was the "A note on the G string".

  • @RipperMen17

Thanks. Most are from Death Studios.

  • how long did it take you to learn this?, and your bass sounds great

  • @LeGiTxOvErDrIvE

That's a tough question. It was a long time ago and it took some time to actually learn the notes. Some more time to get it to the point where I was able to play along with the recording. And even more time to be able to play it along with other players. In some senses I'm still working on it and I began the day the album came out. Sorry I couldn't be more precise. Thanks.

  • nice tutorial thx man

  • @peruloc

If you "don't mean to be mean" then don't. Being mean requires a decision making process and making a choice. Saying something stupid, on the other hand, can often not be helped. You have my condolences.

  • those masks are cool as shit

It's a 4003 which I got in 2008 or 9. Everything is stock except for the bridge which I replaced with a Hipshot and the bridge pick-up bezel which I got from Pickguardian. The pick-up have adjustable pole pieces that allow you to raise or lower the height which helps balance out the individual string volumes.

I think some of the "tone" you're hearing might be the way I have the bass set up - with low action, neck set straight and light strings coupled with the way I strike the strings

  • If you don't mind me asking, what model Rickenbacker is that? I have a 1978 model 4001, but the bridge pickup on your Rick looks different than the one on mine. Also, mine doesn't seem to have that monstrous, growling tone, but I'm not sure if that is the bass, an amp, effects, or just playing style.

I just saw your exchange with cbarrett34. Thanks for taking up the challenge, but I'm sorry you wasted your time - with all due respect to him, it's sort of like talking to a wall. I agree with everything you said. Many tabs out there are terribly inaccurate. People should look at them more critically and use them in conjunction with their own ears.
