A Hollywood Director I am not but with Charlene Schurch's approval, this is my feeble attempt at showing you the tip for eliminating gusset holes that I learned from taking her class.
It's been a few months since I took the class so I may not do it exactly as she taught us, but as you will see at the end of the video, gusset holes are a thing of my past.
I also want to note that this is used when both stitches on either side of the ladder are purl. Your best bet is to purchase Charlene's book for full details. It's worth every penny and then some... and if you can take one of her classes... go for it. Very down-to-earth lady with a lot of great knitting tips!
I am wondering where you are from since we have the same last name :)

Thanks for this video!
Does anyone have a trick for minimizing holes behind cables? I use a smaller needle ( two sizes) only for the row below, then switch back to the larger ones to make the cable rows. It helps but the hole is still there.

Were your heel flap stitches slipped? Usually, I see/hear to pick up the loops of the 'v' stitches...You are -- I think -- saying to pick up the bar between the stitches?? They were knit stitches then and Not slipped stitches?
And at the join area you said the stitches which close the hole are actually purl stitches? How'd they get there?! ;^)
Thanks for further clarification. I really need to close those holes! So far, no method I've tried has worked so well as yours looks!

I wish it had been with a lighter colored yarn. But Thanks so much for the excellent guide. Much easier than my old fashion way.
