It's the holiday season, and people everywhere are going home and rejecting everything they were raised to believe. Is there a tasteful way to do this? No! There are FOUR tasteful ways to do it! David Ellis Dickerson explains.

Also: David will be on This American Life this weekend, in the episode "Bait and Switch," talking about growing up evangelical. Why not give it a listen? www.thislife.org

  • Okay sure those cute kittens aren't going to hell...but according to my fundy family they're also not going to heaven (animals don't have souls so they can't get into heave)...sigh

And don't kid yourself! My family would DEFINITELY reject me. They've already said they believe I'm going to hell! I am, after all (in their words) "Satan's tool". I'm thinking that a cutsie card wouldn't cut it for them....but all the same I do love the "Samaritatheist".

  • I think if they DO reject you, the "Samaritatheist" card puts the moral burden onto them. As it should! Sorry to hear about it, though.

  • How about this one?

    Out side says...

People ask me if I don't believe in God what do I believe in?

    Inside says...

I tell them that I believe in you....

  • Hey! Not bad!

  • It is really ironical that the atheist that has to come out to potentially hostile religious parents is forced to emphasized not being a jerk about it. the reason that they have to "come out" is because the religious ones are obviously going to be jerks about it

  • Anybody so biggoted that you'd have to be this careful about telling them you don't share their beliefs isn't somebody worth associating with.

  • continued... there is rarely true black and white, but we perceive shades of gray as either one or the other. i believe the world is in slavery to a few people... and the majority of them like it. i believe people are wilder than any other animal. i believe i am lucky to be here, even though i believe in one timeline and one universe and that because choices are based on experience and genetic predisposition, the universe is deterministic. sorry about the weird rant just there!

  • continued... love is a construct used to make us behave in a way that is beneficial to our genes being passed on, in more ways than one. Hatred and fear are in the same boat, but each in moderation, too much of any emotion will rot the mind.i believe in consequence not karma. i believe mystical experience is hard wired into us and while fun at the time should be examined properly without bias from wanting it to be real.

  • this is what i believe, it may be that we are part of a larger reality that we can't see or examine, it suffices me though to treat this universe as reality and not as an illusion. quantum physics shows that particles can be made to be connected but certainly not the entire universe. we evolved outside the logic of quantum physics and as we now learn about it we make sense of it in our much larger realm of logic and thus find it mystical.

  • haha he has a fireplace on his TV :D

  • off sync

  • That was a great video. From one atheist to another :)

  • and of course none of the Christians are elitist at all. Give me break. they're the biggest snobs of them all. tell a christian you're an atheist and they look at you like you just admitted to devil worship and puppy kicking. obviously we atheists have no morals at all. See you in hell.

  • I'm opposed to organized religion in some ways. But I don't think I have a problem with people believing in God. I don't believe in a God. But here's some of what I would hypothesize about our existence and the universe based on my observations.

Everything is connected in some way. (see quantum physics)

Love is a powerful force. (see my own heart/mind)

Hatred and fear rot the mind.

we create our own heaven or hell here on earth
