The Animal Ark Wildlife Sanctuary in Reno, Nevada is on the cutting edge of cheetah care. Cheetahs are built to run and regular exercise is absolutely vital for their health. To keep their three cheetahs healthy, Animal Ark is one of only a few facilities in the world that regularly runs them unrestrained on a high-speed course.
As you'll see in the video, the staff sets up the course in a dirt field approximately the size of a football field. A piece of yellow caution tape is tied to a motorized string, which can run up to 55mph. With a top speed near 70mph, the cheetahs could easily catch the lure in a dead run, so the staff add a few jogs and turns to keep the cats on their toes.
Once a month during their open season (April thru October) these high-speed runs are open to the public to raise funds for wild cheetah conservation in Africa. For more information, please visit www.animalark.org.
Best lure coursing I have seen with cheetahs. Good speed and length at the run. I would guess that they will learn to take the short cut though. Thanks!
