Why we need higher gasoline taxes

@vbdenny It is a shame that there are not more choices for diesel cars and light trucks offered here in the US. The American and Asian manufacturers only offer gasoline power and hybrids. Hybrids offer fuel efficiency, but they are more complicated from an engineering standpoint. I would certainly look into diesels because they offer an increase in efficiency of 30% to 40% over gasoline engines and they last a lot longer. Diesel is widely available over here in Pennsylvania at local stations.

@Dotsirammi - oh yeah, the roads still bad. Exactly why the 99ers are doing the Occupy Wall Street. 1% sucked up all the money and you can only sell so many new BMW, Lexus and Mercedes cars when your market is 1%. I think they actually expect to get their money back but ah ah ahh, not so fast. The 99ers best remember and old saying, "he who holds the gold, makes the rules." The protest seems to be growing everywhere and pretty soon something will give. Congress needs to stop the bullshit & WORK

@Dotsirammi Hardly anyone here uses Diesel so not all stations have it available. I think It is a little more expensive than gasoline, maybe $3.60 USD?

How much diesel cost there? Here it is 1,339 euro, and still we got bad roads;)
gas cost too fucking much as it is. $4 a gallon isnt high enough?? The government gets 7 times more money in tax per gallon for gas than the oil companies make in profit. Theres way more than enough money to fix the roads but the government keeps wasting the money.

@KripDrip yeah they waste money. I suppose getting rid of a couple of wars would really help. I don't gives a rat's ass about a Billion $ embassy in Iraq, total waste of money. And don't kid yourself about how much oil companies are making.

Hi, I live in Va Beach too. Looks like you're in Hampton on 64, caught in afternoon traffic. I disagree about raising gas taxes. They have enough revenue, it's simply misspent. A large portion of the federal share goes to boondoggles like high-speed rail. Also, Obama has not signed the six-year highway bill in two years (like dems and the budget)--short term continuing resolutions instead.

@LCCharlie You favor tolls over raising the gas tax? That is crazy because you KNOW they will siphon off a bunch of thee money just to pay for the toll collection system, Adding a few cents on a gallon is much more economically responsible and will actually save us money. Now off for tailgating at ODU/JMU (in the rain).

@vbdenny I never suggested raising tolls, that's pure sophistry. I said the government tax enough but the money is siphoned off for political gain. During the Eisenhower years an entire interstate highway system was built; the difference is that it was done within the existing tax structure, without the massive union shakedowns, the environmental tyrany and the crony capialism rampant today. McDonnell on the state level is turning things around, however.

@LCCharlie No, McDonnel is NOT turning things around, instead he is failing to pay the states obligations such as the unfunded contribution to the VSRS. of $65million and instead replacing that with IOU's which they will not want to pay back in the future. McDonnel is all talk and most is total BS.
