Regardless of the argument, this is still impressive for the Gameboy Advance. However, we do sometimes forget that the GBA was in fact a 32bit handheld system.

I played the finalized game. The graphics have been heavily downgraded and easily recognizable as Mode 7 programming.

To be more specific, they're called voxels. The level is just one big image map, with a height values assigned to every pixel. Voxels = volumetric pixels.
There were a few games released on the GBA that did use voxel engines, but it seems Rare ultmately decided against it, because of the performance loss. :-/
Whoa, badass opening. Looks like it would have stressed the GBA's limits.
