Using the Healthy Diet Pyramid
The Healthy Diet Pyramid is a guide, to help you plan and eat a well balanced diet each day. In general, you should select more food from the base of the pyramid (the carbohydrates), and less from the top of the pyramid (fats, oils, sugar, salt).

Rice and alternatives - Placed at the base of the Pyramid are rice, noodles, bread, pasta, cereals, porridge, lontong, chapati, naan, idli, thosai & biscuits. These foods are excellent sources of complex carbohydrates, vitamins & minerals & dietary fibre. You should consume at least five servings daily, preferably including one serving of wholegrain products.

Fruit - This group consists of fresh, dried, frozen, canned fruit and fruit juices. They are rich sources of vitamin A, C, potassium, fibre (excluding fruit juices) and flavonoids. Take two servings a day, especially the deeply or brightly (yellow, orange) coloured ones.

Vegetables - This group consists of leafy, non-leafy, cruciferous and root vegetables. They are rich sources of vitamins A, C, folic acid, minerals such as calcium, iron, potassium, fibre and phytochemicals. Take two servings a day and include one serving daily of dark green or yellow-orange vegetables.

Meat and alternatives - This group includes meat, poultry, fish, seafood, milk, milk products, nuts and seeds. These foods are excellent sources of protein, calcium, B-vitamins, iron and zinc. Take at least two servings a day.

  • The base of the pyramid needs to be at the apex. This USDA food pyramid is friendly to the farmer lobby but not so friendly to your insulin levels. It does not take the glycemic index of foods into consideration.

  • This food pyramid is terribly alarming. It suggests one should eat absurd amounts of dairy and grain, especially.

  • @cellardoor199991 I've just started the paleo diet as i'm on a persoanl training course and have learnt about it through fellow trainers. feel grat and it's not extreme, it's just natural and really healthy. How we used to eat thousands of years ago and how it should of stayed!

  • Yeah this is bullshit. Look at the paleo diet pyramid. That's what u need to be doing

  • @SpatialVortex

Thanks for the reply , Im a raw foodist, I used to eat raw dehydrated buckwheat ,which isnt actaually a grain, its a fruit seed. I cut out buckwheat thats all I used to eat. I didnt even eat regualr grains, because I agree with you it does make you tired. I finally removed the buckwheat from my diet and only eating fruit and veggies. Thanks again for the info!!! I havnt been eating grains for a very long time now:) I feel more alive with out it, Fruit gives me the energy!!

GRAINS AND CARBS (processed sugars) make you FAT not Fat itself. If you eat 2 TBSpoons of pork fat, you will be full for 3-4 hours, meanwhile, you would usually eat so much bread and cookies and junk = FAT FAT FAT storage and over eating.

People have been eating saturated fats for thousands of years, only recently we started removing saturated fats, and look - MORE FAT PEOPLE.

You are very misinformed, I used to be a vegan like you, but no more.

  • @xsliceofheavenx

You are full of it. I am on paleo diet, I eat saturated fats all the time. They're so good for you, but right kinds.

I'm 110lbs! and I'm 5'5'... after removing grains from my diet, I removed all of my inflammatory disease.

    Take that.

P.S. I used to be a raw vegan, I felt so tired... and always hungry. '

  • I love eating grains, fruit and veggies, I cut out meat and milk and fats. im a raw vegan!!! Im slim!! The reason why people are obese, is excess fat, and protein!! Meat doesnt digest fast and its like adding extra dead meat to your muscles!!! It makes you get bigger. Unless you want to be 300 pounds and be a bodybuilder>_>@.@ ughh Why would you want to look like the HULK BIG MONSTER:OOO

  • 8 months ago you posted a food pyramid in percentages. But what does that mean? 50% veggies, ok. But what is 20% grain? Is that one cup of grain? Or how much bread per day? I'm confused and getting fat. Help!!! LOL!! thanks
