The Vexilar is the first thing I grab when I go ice fishing. I've been known to bring the Vexilar and forget my rods- true story.

no, they aren't the best by any means, they work, but a flasher style unit like this Vexilar, or a Marcum (Humminbird makes them too). is a much nicer unit and the price will reflect that.

would you say an fl-8 se is better than a showdown? because i'm a teenager and don't have a whole lot of money and i want an affordable unit

Vexilar flashers are the best. No doubt about it. I wont ice fish without my FL-8

Looks like a cool machine, but i have yet to use a fish finder. I print out a map from the DNR website and use it for a referance on depth and bottom type. Its the suprise that makes fishing fun!
