No, it was very unsubtle actually. You're saying "hurr durr this movie aint comedy but ima act like it is cuz IRONY" You spout a bunch of nonsense that makes whatever "joke" you were trying to communicate lose whatever punch it may have had. This is a well acted scene, but as someone who lives close to where this took place I just wish people from other areas would remember this as happening 50 years ago. Most of the time the ignorant racist types are looked on anywhere from uncomfortable awkwardness to downright disgust.
It's good to see these movies every once in a while, but even some local African-Americans would agree that they play these sometime for race-baiting purposes.
