My heart is broken, but what care I? Such pride inside me has woken,
I'll try my best not to cry, by and by,
When the final farewells must be spoken.
I'll join the legion, that's what I'll do, and in some far distant region,
Where human hearts are staunch and true; I shall start my life anew.

Goodbye, it's time I sought a foreign clime,
Where I may find there are hearts more kind than I leave behind.
And so I go to fight the savage foe,
Although I know that I'll be sometimes missed by the girls I've kissed.

In some Abyssinian, French dominion I shall do my bit,
And fall for the flag if I must.
Where the desert sand is nice and handy, I 'll be full of grit,
You won't see my heels for the dust.

I'll do or die, you'll know the reason why when told,
Of bold Leopold's last stand for the fatherland.

Goodbye. Goodbye. I wish you all a last "Goodbye".
Goodbye. Goodbye. I wish you all a last "Goodbye".

  • Thank you imagine9384 and Jonjamb for your stories.

Jonjamg the line "Of boldly opposed last stands for the fatherland"

Should read "Of bold Leopold's last stand for the fatherland"

Leopold is the character in the aperetta (The White Horse Inn) who sings the song after being rejected by his love.

    All the best.

  • @Thedavidjcarter Done! :)

  • I bought the Film4 production "Hear my song" and watched it this week. Even my teenage daughter laughed at it. Parents have odd foresight, my mother went to bed on Monday and woke Tuesday and said - "I am taking along time to die!" I asked her who she wanted to see before she died, it was not a long list. And when she had seen them she went to sleep and did not wake up. I think my mother and your father had the ends they sought. They were very fortunate and I never feel sad about her end.

    thanks

  • fantastic voice and interesting personality.

  • Ah when men were men.....

  • My family were listening to this song with my Dad when he passed away this week. As the final words "Goodbye, goodbye, I wish you all a last goodbye " were sung, my dad took his last breath. It seemed like Dad was speaking to us.

This was one of Dad's favourite songs and it felt like he had almost planned to leave us with this song. I will always remember that moment when I hear this now.

Thank you for posting such a wonderful song.
