As I was driving home late one sunday evening
through bakersfield, california
Listening to gospel music on the colored radio station
I heard the preacher say: you know
you always have the Lord by your side

And I was so pleased to be informed of this
That I ran twenty red lights in his honor
Thank you jesus, thank you lord

I had an arrangement to meet a girl,
and I was kind of late
And I thought by the time
I got there she'd be off
with the nearest truck driver she could find

So when I got there
there she was to my my surprise sittin in the corner
A little bleary, worse for wear and tear
With a girl with far away eyes

So if you're down on your luck
And you can't harmonize
Find a girl with far away eyes
And if you're downright disgusted
And life ain't worth a dime
Get a girl with far away eyes

(Instrumental)

But the preacher kept right on saying
that all I had to do was send
Twenty dollars to the church
of the sacred bleeding heart of jesus
Located somewhere in los angeles, california
And next week they'd say my prayer on the radio
And all my dreams would come true

So I did,
the next day, I got a prayer with a girl
Well, you know what kind of eyes she got

So if you're down on your luck
I know you all sympathize
Find a girl with far away eyes
And if you're downright disgusted
And life aint worth a dime
Get a girl with far away eyes

So if you're down on your luck
I know you all sympathize
Find a girl with far away eyes
And if you're downright disgusted
And life aint worth a dime
Get a girl with far away eyes

(Instrumental)

You get a girl with far away eyes

  • The Stones never fail to remind me that life is worth living.

  • i luv this song !!

  • ; )

  • Aww my memories are back! :D Stones FTW!!! They inspired me a lot, could never change!!!

  • Great video performance here by Jagger; Bill and Charley look look like they wish they were anywhere else but there. And that's a shame, 'cause the song works like a jewel no matter what attitude you choose to sing it in - one of Jagger-Richards's best. According to Richards, an earlier "straight" take of the original studio version was an even better version of it, he was pissed at Jagger for releasing the sardonic official version.

  • not as good as the bleedin' heart allstars version but still does the trick.

  • Absolutely, positively perfect. thank you.

  • This may be the best introduction to Chistianity ever put words and tune to; ironic - yes. Without gravity? No, not at all. The works: humour, sensuality, jokefulness.

And at the end: it works.

Thank you Jesus, thank you Stones.

And may the Lord be with you.
