At 90, the former chancellor is still a much respected political commentator in Germany.
In Germany the former chancellor still stands for integrity, leadership and honesty. Abroad he remains one of Germany's most renowned politicians. In difficult times, like during the current financial crisis, Schmidt's opinion is sought after. During his time as chancellor from 1974 to 1982, he dealt with the terrorists of the Baader-Meinhof gang and lead the country through the economic difficulties that followed the oil price shock in the 70s. Martin Beutler has put together a portrait of a retired statesman whose opinion is still highly regarded in German politics today.
