Here is a little Demo/Teaser video of Quake 1 on the Palm Pre. This is the demo when game first starts as of yet it crashes when new game is selected. Update: Playable version is now available via PreWare. Thanks dtzWill for the port and everyone else at Webos-Internals
Control Scheme and more info here: http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/Application:Quake
No they never intentionally limited people, they just didnt have native access up and running yet, cant give someone an sdk that doesnt work. It takes time to get things like this going.

Yea, 2 years old means that people have had the time to really dig into the devices hardware to take full advantage of it, the guys working on this are still trying to figure out the ins and outs of the pre hardware, and like i just mentioned this is an old video, the latest update is far smoother and easier to play. You can play it just as well as on a console, and the graphics are literally identical to the pc version.

The lag you see here isnt because the gpu isnt capable of handling this, its because this is beta. The very first demo they had of this game was much much slower, they sped it up to playable, and in an update after this video its now just about as smooth as it is on the computer minus a few areas which i'm sure will be further improved. If i had a video recorder i would upload a video of how well it plays now. Maybe you can do that akop87?

They havent limited anybody, what palm did was release the mojo sdk as it was for the most part finished, native access is coming, and soon, otherwise how do you explain someone getting quake and doom to work on the machine if they are so limited? Palm did just was apple did with the iphone, release what they had at the moment to get people working on their device while they worked on a new sdk to let people make more advance 3d, games, hardware access, and other types of apps.

Palm shot themselves in the foot by limiting what a developer could do with the platform! It's like having a Ferrari Enzo stuck in 3rd gear and with a speed limiter.

Agreed.
Even my N95 plays Quake 1 at a MUCH quicker frame rate than the Pre, with AND without OpenGL 1.1 turned on.
In fact, Quake 2 runs infinitely better.
Better yet, Quake 3 runs even smoother.
All this from my 2 year old device... The N900, on the other hand, just simply blows this phone away on every front. Better OS for the pre? Doesn't look like it..

@arachnist The Pre is probably capable of Quake 3, but this Quake 1 port is not using OpenGL yet, but the guys at WebOS-internals are working on it.

pre is still a better phone, hands down...better os.
