TWO WAYS TO SERVE IN THE NATIONAL GUARD

1. ACTIVE FIRST:

A new Army National Guard Program program dubbed "Active First" pays up to $60,000 in bonuses to recruits who opt for 30 to 48 months of active duty service in the US Army then transfer to the National Guard.

Recruits who sign on under the program, which started Oct. 1, receive $20,000 for 30 months of active-duty service, $30,000 for 36 months and $40,000 for 48 months - all paid after completion of basic and job training.

After active service, Soldiers may opt to re-enlist in the active Army or take an additional $20,000 to serve their remaining obligation in the National Guard.

Basically, the recruit enlists in the National Guard, completes Basic Training, serves 30, 36 or 48 months in the US Army and collects up to a $40,000 bonus then finishes his time in the National Guard and collects a $20,000 bonus from the Guard.Up to $60,000 in bonuses for serving.

2. PART TIME

The traditional route of service in the National Guard is part time. Upon completing Basic Training the newly graduated soldier returns home and resumes his regular life, whatever that was prior to shipping to Basic Training. Once a month that soldier will report to a two day "drill" or in other words one weekend of training.

Most soldiers in the Guard are part time warriors who work a full time job or attend college on a full/part time basis. The National Guard was traditionally the service of choice for those individuals who wanted to serve in a reserve status close to home.

The typical service period is 3 or 6 years but bonuses are usually offered for the six year option. Bonuses vary from year to year so check with a recruiter for current amounts.
