I think it could have had a more in depth ending, but folks don't likes long explanations sometimes, especially when it took 4 episodes to play out the whole storyline. It would've made a great movie. I just move on...

Madelyne Pryor is the mother of Cable. Later when X-Factor started in the 80s Maddie was retconned into a clone of Jean in order to reunite the original five X-Men. She "died" in the Inferno Crossover, but appeared later in other X-Books. She became the "Goblin Queen" and tried to kill her infant son Cable, and she is partially responsible for him getting the TO-Virus.
