In 2000 or 2001, I was drove up to Laramie from Denver with my now ex. We asked around -- people in the community were embarrassed, the shame on their faces was self-evident -- to locate the fence. My intent was to get a photo for a PSA. The site was behind a new sub-division, it was all changed.
He was one of many victims. Shortly before or after Matthew's murder, a gay disabled man in a wheelchair was burned and pushed off a bridge in another state.

This was a very moving video, I remember when I first heard about Matthew Shepard a few years ago it really hit me, it taught me about how some people are judged and condemned very harshly because of who they are and how they are born. Things like what happened to Matthew Shepard are still happening in other parts of the world and we need to keep moving forward until everyone has equal rights and no one suffers indignity like Matthew did 13 years ago.
