KCS & UP Trains in East TX 6/18 & 6/20/2011||Tripod+720p

The beautiful piney wood forests of East Texas provide a rich setting for these railfan outings on June 18 and 20. My main focus had been to catch KCS action on the KCS Shreveport-Dallas line, and I had hoped I would at a minimum get either some Southern Belle 'ACes or at least some KCS power with good-sounding Nathan Airchime K5LA horns, since KCS is generally pretty reliable to that end.

Instead of getting what I wanted, KCS and UP swapped roles on me, and there were no Southern Belle 'ACes or K5LA horns to satisfy this railfan's desires. On the morning of June 18 I headed over to Jefferson, TX, where an Advance Approach indication on the UP Little Rock Sub at the Hwy 49 crossing immediately sent me scrambling over to Cass St, where I caught two KCS SD70Macs - with a nauseating UP-style horn on the lead engine - pulling an empty string of gondolas northward on the Little Rock Sub. Later in the morning I had switched over to the KCS Greenville Sub, hoping for better luck, when UP shows its big ugly face with an empty coal drag on the KCS line! There was a little bit of silver lining though with a patched-SP AC4400CW in good condition bringing up the rear. Then on the 20th, I tried my luck again on the Greenville Sub, this time in Avinger, and waited in 100 degree heat and direct sun for nearly three hours - only to once AGAIN see a solid UP lashup powering an empty coal drag!

Motive Power: UP 5952 (AC4400CW-CTE), UP 5929 (AC4400CW-CTE) & UP 6319 (ex-SP AC4400CW, DPU)
Comments: The crossing lights appear to be strobing, but they aren't really, it's just the way the camera processes the image.
