KGB-designed pill promises end to hangovers

A new pill, straight from Russia's Cold War spy games, is making its debut in the West. Its makers claim it can allow users to drink as much alcohol as they want and not have a hangover the next day.
Former Russian secret agent Stanislav Lekarev, whose code name was "Stanley," says the pill was developed in the 1960s to keep KGB spies sober as they plied sources with drink to get information.
While it doesn't prevent drunkenness, they found it does a great job at ending the queasiness and headaches of "the morning after."
Lekarev used the pill to find out where NATO was keeping weapons, but preferred another tactic.
"The second method is to train yourself to drink a lot, which is what the whole country of Russia is doing," he laughs.
For those whose body isn't up to that job, the pill, called "antipokhmelin" -- Russian for anti-hangover -- is sold over the counter in Russia.
"In Russia, we say a guy is so drunk he falls face down in his salad. This pill makes the limit a lot harder to reach," says Dmitri Myasnikov of SKS-Alyans, the company that produces and markets the pills in Russia.
Normally, when alcohol enters the bloodstream, the liver converts it into acetaldehyde, a noxious chemical that causes everything from headaches to cirrhosis of the liver. The hangover pill, however, slows the body's metabolism and turns the acetaldehyde into harmless acetic acid -- also known as vinegar.
Users are prescribed one pill per drink or two pills every other drink. The Russian Ministry of Health claims one of its studies found that soldiers who took antipokhmelin after consuming a half liter of vodka in an hour reported milder hangovers than those who had not.
RU-21 is already all the rage in Hollywood, where actors say the pill helps them to make the most of the party circuit without the red eyes or headaches on the set the next morning.
Now the pill is coming to Canada, courtesy of a Los Angeles-based firm called Spirit Sciences. The company has already begun marketing the drug in the U.S. under the name, RU-21, a play on the legal drinking age in the U.S. The pill's shadowy past plays a central part in its promotional campaign.
But some users say it doesn't eliminate a hangover; it just reduces its effects. The hangover might be lessened, but the cottonmouth and intense thirst is still there.
Even if the anti hangover pill isn't prefect, it may have other benefits. It can bring you back for a moment to the spy games of the Cold War, and let you feel what it was like to be on the other side of the Iron Curtain.

you can avoid a headache by drinking water before bed and nausea by neutralizing your stomach with a splash of lemon and a swig of milk. you will never avoid the spaciness of excessive alcohol ingestion because the alcohol is converted to acetaldehyde by an enzyme that dehydrogenates ethanol. acetaldehyde is toxic and takes some time to be removed from the body. you will never be 100% until this chemical is metabolized and anyone who says they can 'cure' a hangover instantly is f'ing with you.
