Madison's Lake Monona appears to be on the verge of icing over. Though several substantial areas of open water appear visible across the broad expanse of surface ice, tonight's forecast -- 5 degrees Fahrenheit with light wind -- may be enough to close the last stubborn puddles. If the lake does indeed freeze tonight, it would be the second-latest freeze in 150 years of record-keeping. The latest freeze date on record: Jan. 30, 1932. Until this year, the second-latest freeze on record had been Jan. 14, 1890 -- a mark tied in 2000.
