Prologue to the Falcom PC game "Ys Origin", with English subtitles translated and timed by Wyrdwad, and original video encoding by doppiapunta. This is the first draft of the video that will be featured in the upcoming Ys Origin English translation patch, due for release sometime before the end of 2009 (hopefully), with me as translator and doppiapunta and the rest of his team at Figli di Gaucci doing all the hacking and other grunt work.

Note that this translation is based off of the Japanese text, not the "Flench" spoken dialogue. The two are similar, but the Japanese text is much more flowery and detailed than the poorly-spoken French monologue.

Note also that the translation is heavily embellished. Sorry, I tend to do that. ;)

Be sure to click the "Watch in high quality" option below the video, or else the subtitles are virtually illegible.

For more information on the status of this patch, please refer to the latest page in this message board thread:

Or the official page:

Enjoy!

And for those who can't read the subtitles, here's my translation, in full:

Once upon a time, lost within the tides of history, there existed a land of great legend.

The Land of Ys.

It was a paradise, granted unimaginable glory and prosperity under the auspices of its twin Goddesses and its six great Priests.

Therein, the pride of the Goddesses was an object known as the "Black Pearl", through which all the people of the land received innumerable blessings.

Among them was the power of "magic", which allowed the enacting of miracles; and the silver metal "cleria", which was used to augment its efficacy.

With the glory of these powers at their disposal, the people of Ys believed that their radiant prosperity would shine on forever.

... Then one day, disaster struck.

Without warning, hordes of monsters appeared, and Ys was suddenly under attack.

In the blink of an eye, the monsters had completely overrun the land. The people were driven to seek shelter in the Temple of Solomon, which the Goddesses called home.

Though many thought this the end of times, the Goddesses and the six Priests were able to use the power of the Black Pearl to raise the Temple into the heavens, away from the chaos.

But the chaos was soon to follow. A great tower was erected, and winged monsters came soaring through the sky. The crisis that wreaked havoc upon the land had begun ascending for a second round in the air.

Amidst this turmoil came another disastrous event, which would rock the very foundation of the Temple of Solomon.

The twin Goddesses, who served as the cornerstones of Ys society, vanished without a trace...

At this moment, when things looked their bleakest, the six Priests took matters into their own hands.

Choosing from amongst the best of the best, a search party of knights and sorcerers was formed.

These elite were dispatched back down to the darkened and desecrated land, to find the two missing Goddesses before calamity overtook what remained of Ys...

  • I find this game seems so incredible, and I have too much respect for the series to play it through without knowing the story. Therefore, I've taken on the task of learning japanese to be able to play it through.

I consider it a personal experiment to see if I can learn japanese before the patch is ready. Thanks for the hard effort and all the other patches for this series.

  • I can't take credit where it's not due - I've never worked on any other Ys patches, myself, save for the Typing of Ys minigame. This Ys Origin translation patch will be the first one I've ever done.

The sentiment is appreciated, though, nonetheless. (:

  • I'm going to go out on a limb, and guess that that's French? My french is pretty much... terrible, so it's a long shot. But I'm wondering if you chose French because you speak it, or because of legend of the fictional city Ys in Briton? If it's the latter, I'm impressed with your research :)

  • I didn't choose anything, Falcom did when they made the game (that voiceover was there originally, we didn't add it). And yes, it's French - or as I like to say, "Flench", since it's apparently REALLY BAD French spoken by a Japanese person who can't quite pronounce it properly. (:

I assume French was chosen because of the fictional city of Ys, though, yes.

And we have considered re-dubbing the French, BTW, for the final release, with more accurate French spoken by a native speaker.
