Transforming the System: An Interview with Michelle Rhee with Eli Broad. - Aspen Institute

Michelle Rhee is chancellor of DC Public Schools, a district with 50,000 students and 144 schools. She is also the founder of The New Teacher Project, a nationally recognized leader in developing innovative solutions to the challenges of hiring new teachers.

As president and CEO of TNTP, Rhee partnered with school districts, state education agencies, nonprofit organizations, and unions to transform the way difficult-to-staff schools recruit, select, and train highly qualified teachers.

Her work resulted in widespread reform in Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Miami, New York, Oakland, and Philadelphia. Rhee's commitment to excellence in education began in a Baltimore classroom as a Teach-for-America teacher. Rhee currently serves on the advisory boards for the National Council on Teacher Quality, the National Center for Alternative Certification, and Project REACH of the University of Phoenix's School of Education.

If done right. Finland for example treats teachers like professionals, not slaves. Students are taught at home to respect authorities. Teachers in return respect the students. A friend of mine was called a "white cracker", and "dumb white bitch". When she called the parents, only a few responded. The administrator did little or nothing. So yeah, while some tenured teachers need to leave, because they are no good, a whole picture and setting needs to be looked at first!

Why is this improvement statistically impossible? She has a small subset of students so from a simple mathematical standpoint that kind of improvement is entirely possible.

If you have proof she is a liar, why don't you provide the proof. If you don't then I think you're a either a union thug or a bad teacher that Michelle Rhee fired.

In the end, students who succeed are motivated by an inner desire to learn, good study habits and a stable home environment where the parents are involved in their children's lives. You cannot expect the parents to be absent and put all the responsibility on the teachers to motivate the kids to learn when the teacher sees the students for an hour a day. The parents are passing the buck. Why do private schools and home schooling work so well? Parental investment.

It's because the adults only think of themselves. And they are also protected by tenure and labor unions.

I hear all the rhetoric and hope it goes to the heart of the matter, American Education. The other important issue I'd like to bring up,though I wish it was a non-issue, is school bullying and safety/security from outside threats. Sandy Hook, Connecticut is still a hot topic as it should and will be and must be addressed with haste. I'd like to know what her opinion is on the matter, and what she feels is the best fix, whether or not it's in her professional jurisdiction.
