well, the coil aint new, but a lot more is new. i constructed a 'box' which houses the power transformers, rotary sg adjustment, voltage reg, etc. its basically supplies all the power through a four pin computer power connector. the box is just a computer psu box.

red LED means ac power is on
yellow LED means SG is spinning
green LED means power is supplied into inverter

after tuning the flyback freq. and SG RPM, i got about a constant 4" discharge from topload. not bad for a flyback driven coil. i've seen some people on youtube use neon xformers and not get this kind of result.

**** input power 280 watts ****

-notice towards the end before i turn it off: i held a piece of metal to the output and got an arc. then i realized i was holding a camera hooked up to my computer. i felt a discharge go in my left hand with the metal, and out my right hand into the camera. you can see a 'blip' from the spark. i freaked out cause i thought my computer was gonna explode. :D

i found my parents' old video camera and hooked it up to my ati tv tuner card and recorded.

enjoy

like the ending? haha i saw a tetris video from cesarkohl and got an idea

  • You got amazing sparks here! I'm building a flyback driven Tesla Coil as well, but I have to tune it and I need to make a rotary spark gap as my static gap gets hot after 4-5 seconds.

  • yeah i had originally had a static gap with the same psu. the flyback was powerful enough that it was pretty much just a hot arc that formed at the gap. (no quenching) after changing to a rotary, streamer length increased about 60%. have fun with it

  • holy %$*% you mean,

it scared the living daylight out of me :D

  • One more question, what's the secondary resonance frequency? It must be high with this small coil.

  • That's very impressive!

You should have a patent for that ending :D

  • could you send me the instructions foor the spark gap?holy crap man!

  • nice one indeed! All neat and shiny - that's really good!
