Despite the cold rain that began to fall about an hour before it began, thousands of South Shore residents turned up to watch the 56th annual Quincy Christmas parade.
The 13 floats, 19 marching bands, antique cars, and Santa wound along the three-mile stretch of Hancock Street, starting at Elm Street and continuing to East Squantum Street in North Quincy. The number of people that were there on a (rainy) day like today just totally amazed me, said George White, chairman of the Christmas Festival Committee. It wasnt a good day audience, but it didnt miss it by much, White said.
The parade typically has the third highest attendance of any city-run event in the state, after the Boston Marathon and Fourth of July celebration, White said.
An especially big hit was the Bare Cove Fire Museum float, which won the Father Thomas Tierney Award and $1,500 grand prize.
