The Starkey Hearing Foundation embarked on a life-changing mission to Haiti after the earthquake to give the gift of hearing to more than 500 children affected by profound hearing loss. Renowned singer and actress Miley Cyrus volunteered on the mission, joining our efforts at Institut Montfort School for the deaf in Port au Prince, Haiti. Cyrus's hard work and spirit were a special part of the mission and—as this short clip reveals—had joyous results.

Starkey Hearing Foundation's Haiti Hearing Mission was one of the many conducted each year both domestically and internationally. All Starkey Hearing Foundation missions include the distribution of hearing aids and batteries, custom fittings, audio testing, and counseling on how to care for the devices to individuals in need that are affected by hearing loss. The Foundation will return to Haiti on mission with Miley Cyrus in 2012 to continue worldwide efforts to share the gift of hearing with those who have hearing loss.

"I grew up around music with my brothers and sisters and couldn't imagine what it would be like if we couldn't hear the magic of music -- it's had such an influence on my life -- so I want everyone to have the ability to enjoy sound as it was intended."

The 18-year-old actress won a silent auction over the weekend at the So The World May Hear Awards Gala that would send her back to Haiti on her second hearing mission. "After I went on my first mission to Haiti with the Starkey Hearing Foundation, I felt so drawn to helping others hear for the first time and immediately wanted to look for another chance to go back and help again." Miley shared in a statement.
The February 2011 mission with Miley Cyrus was by no means the only one the Starkey Hearing Foundation has embarked upon in Haiti. In May 2011, lives were touched once again when nearly 300 deaf Haitians received the gift of hearing in the heart of Port au Prince on another mission. Special celebrity guests on this mission included the Bill Rancic, actresses Maria Bello and Patricia Arquette and actor Jack Weber.
Each year, the Foundation delivers more than 100,000 hearing aids via hearing missions in countries worldwide. Since, 2000, the Foundation has supplied more than 500,000 hearing aids to people in need and is committed to achieving the goal of distributing more than one million hearing aids by the end of this decade so the world may hear.

The Starkey Hearing Foundation's Mission is to change the social consciousness of hearing and hearing matters through education and research while providing the gift of hearing to those in need around the world. Hearing loss affects one in 10 Americans, and 63 mission million children worldwide, yet mny do not have access to the hearing devices that can help correct that disability.

The first time i got my hearing aids it was a raining day and my mom saids i said "I can hear the rain" because i could not even hear it. It is amazing having hearing aids. changed mu life so much
