In summer 2008, the Clackamas County Sheriffs Office and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) partnered with state and city law enforcement agencies, the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC), and the Clackamas County District Attorneys Office for summer enhanced DUII enforcement patrols.
The patrols focused on high incident locations during weekend, evening hours. Alcohol related crashes increase in frequency from 8pm to 4am with the highest frequency between 1am-3am . This increase can be associated with the hours that bars and taverns close for the evening, says CCSO Lieutenant Graham Phalen, lead coordinator. Patrols took place throughout the summer, situated in various areas of the county. In Clackamas County, over 10% of total reported crashes are alcohol related with an increase during the summer months. The county has employed several strategies to help reduce impaired driving such as minor sales checks, DUII Intensive supervision programs and impact panels.
Safe Communities assisted with funding for the enhanced patrols. More information about the Safe Communities program can be found at: www.ClackamasSafeCommunities.org
