On my Lancaster that air box is empty with the actual air filter on the inner wing. There's a rectangular seal between the air box lid and base, and it's very important to replace this the way in came out. But essentially you never need to touch the air box. Really useful. All the Subarus I've owned (about nine to date) have just used that filter positioned close to the inner wing.
