@Plangentry This is actually a demo, in the 90s Sequel (I think) released (in the UK) all of Curtis's LPs on 2 for 1 CDs, and mid-price! Anyway, this comes from the the disc which accompanied the Roots album,it was called Love, a collection of previously unreleased demos etc. I remember hearing this version and it immediately became an all time favourite Curtis/anyone tune, the refrain at the end could go on for a minute in my opinion.

Just beautiful!!! WOW, just can't believe the trash on the radio! Half ass sorry singers!!

Will somebody please explain what's meant by "harmonic awkwardness"? the later version sounds more polished, of course, but the chord progression is lovely on this version.

@detriniman My single is really to worn to be worth uploading, but it's taken from the 'Sweet Exorcist' album, four years after your version .Tell me,is your version credited to Mayfield and Hathaway,or to Mayfield alone? I notice there's a Mayfield -produced cover by Holly Maxwell that pre-dates the 'Sweet Exorcist' version and is credited solely to Mayfield, and shares its harmonic awkwardness with the 'Curtis' version. Did Hathaway get a co-credit by tidying it up?

Madlib - Dillalade Ride (Contact High)
I have a 7"single version of this song, with string arrangement, and better chord voicings. But this is looser, and the vocal is incredible. Fantastic song,co-written with Donny Hathaway.
