From my experience with learning how to fence as a novice in the past, I fully expect my more experience opponent not to show any mercy. Surely I know that I'll loose, but I'll try my best to beat my opponent and to improve my techniques during that struggle. The greatest honor would be for my opponent to fence normally and to expose my weakness, and not to take-it-easy with me.

Wonderful! I also coach 2-3 graders in multi-league baseball. Repetitively, our team was ahead but only to loose it in the last inning. The cause is exactly the same mentality you mentioned here! However, I do have parents who don't like using the words "play to win" but I disagree. I think it's a part of the game to learn and to develop the competitiveness during the game without being unsportsmanlike. It is after that the team did their best & the game is over, then no matter who won or lost.

Great point about winning the mental game. I agree, whether one wins or loses its more important to feel like you played your best and left everything out there, winning or loosing on your terms, playing your game. I know sometimes I feel bad about beating people, but I have to remind myself that we are all trying to get to the next level and me beating them (or being beaten) is part of the process.
