Former Nazi Commander Gets Life Sentence

A Munich court sentences a former Nazi army commander to life in prison. The commander was responsible for the murder of Italians during World War II.
This is a scene on the streets of parts of Italy during 1944 -- the height of World War II.

It was in June of this year that Nazi army commander Josef Scheungraber is accused of having ordered the brutal killings of at least 11 Italians.

Four civilians were shot dead on a Tuscan street and then 11 more were rounded up and herded into a building before it was blown up.

Ten of the 11 died.

Scheungraber was charged with ordering all 14 murders, but in the end was only convicted of 10, due to lack of evidence.

Today -- 65 years later -- a Munich court has sentenced him to life in prison -- or at least what's left of it.

He's now nearly 91 years old.

The State Prosecutor, Hans-Joachim Lutz, says the accused's crimes were based on revenge.

[Hans-Joachim Lutz, State Prosecutor]:
"The motive of the accused was to take revenge for the killing of two of his soldiers. He sent his soldiers to fetch material and that's when they died. So he wanted to avenge that. And that's why revenge happened which cost the lives of innocent civilians."

Scheungraber, who lived for decades as a free man running a furniture shop, denies the charges.

He says he handed the Italians over to the military police, but had nothing to do with what happened afterwards.

But the victims' relatives welcomed the sentence, saying it served a valuable lesson.

"It is a very important decision. Also because these facts are a reminder - a reminder that this must never happen again. Even in a dramatic situation such as war when soldiers are in a difficult situation. There is an
individual responsibility which should never be oppressed."

The case is one of Germany's last Nazi trials, alongside that of John Demjanjuk, a suspected death camp guard who will face trial for being an accessory to nearly 28,000 counts of murder in Nazi death camps.

There were no actual evidence. Only contradictory testimonies. This was a show trial, as every trial on these matters was since war. The current regime likes to present itself to be "democratic", yet they are just as bad in persecuting former soldiers and political dissidents, as they claim that the socialist regime of the 30s was. This regime is just as radical and ruthless in persecution of political opponents and ordinary former servicemen in promoting their own ideology. Dispicable.
