Pink Lady performs "Kiss in the Dark" from Let's Go Young, circa 1979. Because Mie and Kei sang the song in English, Japanese subtitles were provided for the viewing audience at home.

  • Hey JeffB, if you're the one who runs that Pink Lady fansite, I LOVE your website. I have never seen Pink Lady & Jeff (and may possibly be all the better off for that) but these two made some damn good music. They did more than respectable English here. This song seems to have been big in New England, as it got played on some major stations there including WRKO in Boston and WAVZ in New Haven, CT.

Wasn't there also a bilingual version with the verses in Japanese and chorus in English?

  • @Superbook4Eva: Yep! That's me, and that's my website! Thanks for the kind words about it! A pity you've never seen PL & J as that show packs more cheese than a Wisconsin dairy. HA! When "Kiss in the Dark" came out, it made quite an impact. The song was catchy and teens just plain fell in love with Mie and Kei. To answer your question, I do believe there was a Japanese version of KITD, but when the girls sang the song in concert, they almost always did so in English.

  • Wonderful as always. GOD I love these two! I hate the song, but because Pink Lady is singing it is what makes it a hit in my mind and heart. Number 37 on the U.S. charts

  • Not bad for a foreign act cracking the U.S. charts. I've always maintained that if KITD came out a year or even six months earlier than it had, it might've reached number 1!

  • YES!

  • 今日はピンクレディでもりあがろう。

  • @barristerwolf 30 years after "kiss in the dark" , a korean group called "wondergirls" had released a single called "nobody" . it was the 3rd asian act to be in the US top 80 with #76

    try to hear it !

  • Legend of 70's.

    amazing.

    Thank you!

  • I saw Kei perform this last year, Murakami on the drums, in Mito, Ibaraki. It was actually an encore after all the jazzy stuff. Some ladies next to me got up and starting dancing right there. Crazy! Had a chance too to go backstage cause I was with a local musician that knows Murakami personally. Man, some good memories. I wasn't even born when this was released, haha.

  • They were the second Japanese act to be in the U.S. top 40 in 16 years. The first was

Kyu Sakamoto with "Sukiyaki" the Japanese love song. #1 in 1962. Guess you are right, timing is everything! :)

  • Amazing, ain't it? ^_^

  • Just in case anybody is interested, Kieko Masuda is now recording solo and her new album is Jazz and Pop, called "Now and Then" and Mitsuyo Nemoto (Mie) is now with Animetal Lady and does, yes you guessed it, Heavy Metal! That will give your head a rush.

  • Kei seemed to still be hiding behind Mei. She was the only one of the two I was interested in seeing and the videos seemed to always lean more toward Mei Nemoto.

  • There is a reason for that, when this started Kei Masuda lacked confidence, she had been the ugly little girl through high school and really nothing special except for Mei Nemoto being her best friend. So, Mei became Kei's confidence and Kei became Mei's ambition and drive. This couldn't have happened one without the other.

  • Really? I like Kei more :).

  • I've noticed that Mei seems to overshadow her partner Kei.

  • To ampinoy13: I'm a huge Pink Lady and I've always been of the opinion that if KITD came out six months to a year sooner than it had, it might've reached number one. That it reached into the top 40 at a time when Disco was dying was proof the song had legs, just not enough, given the poor timing.

  • one of Japanese sang English disco pop that made it in the International Pop Chart. It is the time of the turntables!

  • Never heard this song up until now.

  • I love this disco song, unfortunaly i do not have the long version of kiss in the dark :(
