This play is not an excessive display of taunting. He simply lifted his arms slightly. It's pretty ridiculous that the touchdown was nullified. It's not like he gave him the bird or did a flip into the endzone. Rules are rules, but the outcome of this situation is just stupid. What's the point of playing the game if you can't enjoy yourself. The NCAA doesn't care what these kids are like, they care if they are good. The only time character comes into play is with the school's image. All about $.

The person that came up with that rule never won anything. Horrible rule.

Also, consider where some of these kids came from. In the US, football is notorious for attracting poor kids with rough backgrounds. It doesn't matter if you're talking about a kid from one of the northeastern megacities, a guy from the deep south, a farmers son from the midwest, or an immigrant from the west coast. It's their school and the NCAA's job to help shape these young men into high character adults.

I think the issue here, as far as sportsmanship, is the taunting. He waved the ball at a player on the other team. There's nothing wrong with celebrating with your teammates or running to the crowd to get a reaction, but we still try to keep a level of sportsmanship at the collegiate level. Remember, this is not a pro league, the kids are there representing their schools on athletic scholarship.

That is actually part of the issue I see with pads in football. They protect you from having your skull caved in, which WAS a problem... but now the helmet has made the head a weapon, which is why you see 45 year old former NFL all-stars committing suicide with severe brain damage revealed as a possible culprit. It's a no win situation, and eventually I think the game will get neutered of hitting because the health risk is just too great. But I digress...

Rugby is a fine sport man, definitely a lot of fun to play. You won't find me saying a bad word about it. With that said, it's just not as dangerous. Played both. Trust me on this. Rugby is a great game for endurance and form tackling. My coaches in high school encouraged us to play it in the offseason because it was easy on the body while keeping us in shape and most importantly, it's a great sport to develop proper tackling technique.
