Version 1.1 of soniNeko (my hack of Sonic 1) has several improvements from the previous version. One of them is the options screen, you can access it by pressing B+Start at the title screen. C+Start shows you an informative screen instead.

One of the newly added options is the variable time limit: the classic 9:59 is now customizable. I made sure that every level in this hack is beatable with a time limit of 0:59 by placing several Time Monitors in the longest levels; however, some people complained that Dire Docks Zone 3 is impossible.

With this video, which is NOT TOOL-ASSISTED because I hate that shit, I demonstrate that it's completely possible to beat Dire Docks Zone 3, it is just very, very hard.

Make sure to check soniNeko's page on the Sonic Retro Wiki: http://info.sonicretro.org/soniNeko

The download link is on that page as well.

Have fun :)

  • To use the Options in 1.1 use Up+Down+Left+Right+B+Start then there ya go!

  • Actually B+Start is enough :)

Up+Down+Left+Right is needed only if you want to use the level select.

  • now this is one fine hack! i think it's the most impressive one i've seen so far ever since the 2-player secret of evermore hack. I'm impressed by how many features you managed to cram into that game (monitor and bgm-wise). i love good morning zone and its background music. good job of finally making sonic a challenge again :)

one question though: why do you say in your vid description that you hate tool-assisted runs, yet you made a nice TAS of OverTop?

  • I really love speedruns, the comment in the description was just sarcasm, I might as well remove it since it causes confusion..

Thanks for the feedback, anyway, I'm glad that you like my hack :D

  • Whoa, that stage is...fuckin' trippy. Is there a reward for getting all the rings and extra lives in that crazy little drug-nightmare box?

  • No, the stage itself is meant to be a reward for when you collect all the emeralds, and it's a chance to collect some lives before you get to the final levels. Besides, you can't collect all the rings, because there are 1080 of them, but the ring counter is limited to 999.

  • LOL GOOD MORNING ZONE!!!

  • The drowning music can kill a person of laughter.

  • I think the drowning music is too cheery for something indicating you're about to die.

  • I laughed at the Sega screen.Seriously.

  • ahhh i see. it's not really clear that you are being sarcastic, at least not for people who don't know you ;)

anyway, be proud of your hack! i was already thinking of a way of how to trigger all tracks in it, then i saw your in-game music menu and then i found your vgz-bgm download on your site :) now all i need is to find a vgz-player and i'm all set :)

btw, what made you pick the pipi langstrumpf theme as a level ending music? i hated that tune ever since i was a kid lol
