Vicky Leandros performing "Après Toi" ("After You"), Luxembourg's entry at the 1972 Eurovision Song Contest.

Well, what can I say about such a classic? Long before the contest, everyone considered this a sure favorite, and Vicky's flawless, bigger-than-life performance sealed the deal - thus continuing the early 70s tradition of victories for epic French-language ballads sung by strong female voices, one that had started the year before with Séverine and would carry over to the next year with Anne-Marie David (incidentally, "Après Toi"'s lyricist Yves Dessca had also written "Un Banc, Un Arbre, Une Rue", thus becoming the only person in ESC history with back-to-back wins!). And it was a sort of sweet revenge for Vicky, after having to settle for 4th place in 1967 with "L'Amour Est Bleu" despite, again, being a favorite (legend has it that she didn't want to return to the contest after that, and that it took a lot of begging and a song as strong as this one to change her mind!). Second time was the charm, though, making her the first Greek artist to win the contest, a full 32 years before Helena Paparizou (and the 10 million records she sold with this one didn't hurt, either!).

  • you can see she sings this song from the heart,a fantastic song and performance ,and it sounds just as good in english, but saying that vicky would have made it sound good in any language

  • Are you insane .. Beg steal or borrow was NOT a better song than this ..and Vicky nailed it dead right here in 72 . It won because it's a classic , even today .. She's much older now , but in her day she killed with this song ..

  • Den absolut bästa melodin 1972 ESC utan tvivel. Nummer 5 i ESC historiskt sett- En grandtune!!

  • The New Seekers were far better... Their performance was magical and their song was much nicer by music, lyrics and voice. They really should have won... The (Eve Graham, Lyn Paul, Peter Doyle, Marty Kristian and Paul Layton) New Seekers is the best band ever!

  • This sound really good. One of the 10 best eurovision winners ever.

  • θεωρώ τη Βίκυ αξεπέραστη: ολοκληρωμένη καλλιτέχνιδα.

  • I think the message is important in music too, and not just dramatic, powerful orchestral arrangement, like in apres toi, the verses are nice but i think the chorus is just shouting, I just wanted to say my opinion, don't be offended =) Luxembourg's 1973 entry by anne-marie david on the other hand was the best of that year also in my opinion. But UK is just magical in 1972

    =)

  • I do think beg steal or borrow was better, so maybe I'm crazy =) I love vicky and the french language and luxembourg and this is beautifully sung by vicky, a really strong performance but i find the song itself pretty ordinary and bland and boring, just somehow a "typical" song, heard songs like this many many times before, not original at all, and the lyrics are typical"oh I love you and now i'm crying because you're gone" stuff. beg steal or borrow is much nicer and has important message =)
