It's 1957 and another highly enjoyable film from Basil Dearden with a host of well known actors. Peter Sellers enjoying his character of an old "boozer", never happier than when got some makeup on and a character a million miles from his own. Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers together before their teaming in Born Free (1966). Margaret Rutherford playing herself, well the character she made her own! Leslie Phillips approaching his "I say..." and "Well hello............." era.
Virginia McKenna ... Jean Spenser
Bill Travers ... Matt Spenser
Margaret Rutherford ... Mrs. Fazackalee
Peter Sellers ... Leslie Quill
Bernard Miles ... Old Tom
Leslie Phillips ... Robin Carter
Jean and Bill are a struggling married couple with Bill trying to scrape a living as a writer. Out of the blue they receive a telegram informing them that Bill's long-lost uncle has died and left them his business - a cinema in the town of Sloughborough. They pack their bags and travel to Sloughborough expecting to sell the cinema to gain a huge inheritance, however, they discover the cinema is falling apart and is run by a comically incompetant staff who seem to have worked there forever. They set out with a plan to sell it but things don't quite go to plan.
Bernard Miles pops up in films but the theatre was his love oh and Mackeson stout - "By golly it does you good." He was only the second actor to receive a Life Peerage for his work in the theatre especially opening the Mermaid Theatre.
Has any one ever heard of an old British movie called Georgdie starring Bill Travers as a scot that goes to the Olympics.and wants to wear his kilt but can,t.A great film for us Scots.

It is available on Amazon in "Alastair Sim - The Comic Icons Collection DVD 1951 " at £14.93 - 5 films including Geordie!
If not on Amazon Canada - I have ordered CDs off Amazon Germany but there might be problems with format? Although I did have dvds from USA and they worked ok.
