Actually, the car was Kirk's dad's. His father's brother, Jim's uncle, wanted to sell it while Jim's mothr was off planet.

@TheDalinkwent, The car was his stepfathers which he clearly didn't like, so he destroyed it. You may not like the film, but this movie is the main reason I'm  a fan of all things Star Trek.
