JS Bach Toccata in F BWV 540

Pipe Organ:

St. Mary the Virgin
New York City, New York, USA
Aeolian-Skinner 1932 IV/93

Organ specs:

Aeolian-Skinner Organ Company, Inc.
Boston, Mass. -- Opus 891 (1932), 891-A (1942)
Revised by Mann & Trupiano (1988-2002)
Electro-pneumatic action
4 manuals, 91 stops, 93 ranks

The 1995 rebuilding and addition of 17 ranks were made by Mann & Trupiano of Brooklyn, under the direction of Lawrence Trupiano, and with the assistance of many others. The original four-manual Aeolian-Skinner console was completely rebuilt with new drawknobs and keyboards; it was relocated to the chancel but later returned to the rear gallery. A rebuilt three-manual Holtkamp console that can control most of the organ was added in the chancel. From 1988-2002, a total of 32 ranks were added to the organ.

  • must be hard for such a Cameron hater to actually enjoy something he recorded

  • This sounds nothing like anything Cameron Carpenter could ever hope to do in his wildest dreams! This performance is being played by a REAL organist!

And the performance has the unmistakeable Willeke Smits name stamped all over it!

  • @Clarion004

well you would happen to be 100% wrong. this is off Cameron Carpenter's latest album "Cameron Live"

check my other videos for the interview that goes with this piece

  • This sounds like Cameron Carpenter playing. If it is, he is playing this Toccata in F#.

So is this shot of the Holtkamp chancel organ?

  • Wow! This is fucking insane!

Comes like a tsunami and blows your head right off!

    Amazing!!!

  • This might be my favorite organ of all time now. Possibly the best reeds I've ever heard, especially the pedal Bombardes.

  • t nearly blew the speakers out on my PC!

Yes, technically, it is wonderful-the organist is obviously very accomplished.

Not enough `light and shade` for me, however-maybe Bach wanted it this way.

    A fine effort though-very impressive.

  • @Ntalikeris666, as far as showing off...if someone manages to still say something beautiful, I don't care. Someone like Lang Lang, on the other hand...

  • @KhagarBalugrak It all depends on the perspective from which you see a piece of music. In my opinion any way of playing is acceptable as long as the person playing supports his approach adequately.

I have as well, heard many other versions of the piece, some of which were boring (Something especially easy with the particular piece), some others though were simpler in terms of registration and, lets put it that way, much less of a 'showoff', but still managed to convince me through other means.

  • @Ntalikeris666, well, I think people should reconsider. Bach would have loved dynamic contrasts in his organ works. It is well-known that in his other pieces, like those for chamber ensembles, he would make dynamic contrasts; only the technological limitations of his time prevented him from using dynamic contrasts in his organ pieces.
